Iran the pariah state Iran on the brink of chilling new era of war

Image
Iran could be on the verge of economic collapse, just as the grave extent of the country's executions this year has come to light, according to a new report. The report, put together by the Henry Jackson Society this week, says that if the Islamic Republic falls, there is a danger that it "could lead to a vacuum of governance that is accompanied by civil war." This comes as the United Nations have accused Tehran of executing nearly 900 people already this year "as a tool of intimidation." The Henry Jackson Society cite that Iran has "suffered several significant strategic setbacks that began with Israel targeting its air defences in April 2024 in response to Iran's own missile attack on Israel, followed by the decapitation of Hezbollah and the fall of the Assad regime." While the Iranian regime is considered harmful by many, economic collapse would be disastrous for the region and for the Iranian people. The report says that the surrounding na...

How Much Revenue Has The U.s. Collected From Trump’s Tariffs?

How Much Revenue Has The U.s. Collected From Trump’s Tariffs? The U.S. has collected $142 billion from tariff revenue so far this fiscal year, which ends in September, according to Treasury Department data released earlier this month. Since Trump’s tariffs took effect in April, his levies have generated about $96 billion in revenue, after customs duties jumped to $28 billion in July, marking an annual increase of 273%. Customs duties accounted for $27 billion in revenue for June, $22 billion in May and $16 billion in April. Before Trump’s tariffs were announced, customs duties totaled $8 billion in March and $7 billion in February and January. Customs duties are tariffs or taxes paid by importers in international trade, meaning companies, businesses or individuals in the U.S. are required to pay levies as goods enter the country. Trump said last month his administration would “consider” sending checks based on the revenue his tariffs have generated. Sen. Josh Hawley, R-Mo., intro...

Trump gives update on tariff rebate checks for Americans - 'A lot of money coming in

Image
President Donald Trump gave an update on his plans to provide Americans with a tariff rebate check on Tuesday, telling reporters during a Cabinet meeting that levies are bringing "a lot of money" into the country. The president was vague about the prospects of rebate checks, but he assured there is a "concept" being worked on by the White House to partially refund Americans for their contributions. Trump added: "There's a possibility. Primarily we want to pay down debt, but there's a possibility that we take a piece of it and make a dividend to the people." Trump's reassurance came a week after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent doubted the possibility of Americans ever seeing these checks. He explained on CNBC's "Squawk Box" last Tuesday that the administration's projected total of $300 billion in tariff revenue would be first applied to driving down America's national debt. "We're going to bring down the def...

Japan's $550 billion US investment coming this week

Image
TOKYO (Reuters) -The United States will make an announcement this week on Japan's $550 billion investment in the U.S., Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said, with a top Japanese trade envoy planning to visit Washington to formalise the package. The Japanese agreement, which we're going to announce later this week, that's $550 billion at the hand of Donald Trump," Lutnick told the Ingraham Angle show on Fox News on Monday night. The Japanese funds could be used for the manufacturing of products such as semiconductors, antibiotics or rare earths in the U.S., Lutnick added. Tokyo's top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa plans to visit the U.S. this week to craft a written confirmation on the financial details of the package, such as the split of investment returns between the U.S. and Japan, a government source close to the negotiations told Reuters. Washington and Tokyo agreed in July to set a reduced 15% tariff on imports from Japan in exchange for a $550 billion pa...

China will never be the most powerful nation on Earth. Here are the numbers

Image
China will never be the most powerful nation on Earth. Here are the numbers How plausible is it that China will overtake the US to become the world’s largest economy in forthcoming decades? In the standard way that economists measure the size of economies, the Chinese economy remains materially smaller than the US economy – only around 64 per cent of its size as of 2024 – even though China caught up considerably over the couple of decades to 2020 (with the US outgrowing China since then). But what will happen over the rest of the Twenty-First Century? Will China overhaul the US and eventually become so much larger that it will become much more militarily powerful as well (e.g. easily taking over Taiwan and perhaps threatening Korea and Japan as well)? Or do demographics means that China is now doomed to fall back? After all, the Chinese population, now some 1.4 billion persons, has already fallen below that of India, as the effects of longstanding Chinese policies to try to curtail wha...

Expert predicts date new war could break out as Israel-Iran tensions explode

Expert predicts date new war could break out as Israel-Iran tensions explode Tensions are heating up between Israel and Iran - and an expert believes that all-out war could begin again by the end of August. There's a catch, however - Israel won't be able to sustain such a military venture without the U.S. fully backing its efforts, according to Trita Parsi, the executive vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. While both Israel and Iran keep their weapons stores "under wraps," Parsi said that Western intelligence assessments indicated that Iran "still has 1,600 missiles that can reach Israel." Iran is anticipating an attack Iran is already anticipating another Israeli attack against it, Parsi said, and is "preparing." In the first 12-day war, he said the Middle Eastern country "played the long game, pacing its missile attacks as it anticipated a prolonged conflict." That means two things - the first is that ...
