US backs Taiwan’s $40 billion DEFENSE PLAN AGAINST EVIL COMMUNIST CHINA

aiwan President William Lai proposed a $40 billion supplemental defense budget to counter growing military pressure from China and to expand domestic arms production. The proposal faces political obstacles because Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party does not hold a legislative majority and the Kuomintang opposes large military budgets, and it could prompt retaliation from Beijing. Key questions remain about President Lai’s Democratic Progressive Party securing enough legislative votes, how the package will be financed, and whether the plan will prompt economic or military retaliation from China. The American Institute in Taiwan and a U.S. State Department spokesperson welcomed the plan and expressed support for higher Taiwanese defense spending. The Spokesperson said, “We welcome Taiwan’s announcement of a new $40 billion special defense procurement budget. Consistent with the Taiwan Relations Act and more than 45 years of commitment across multiple U.S. Administrations, the United States supports Taiwan’s acquisition of critical defense capabilities, commensurate with the threat it faces.”
